In St John’s gospel there is a revealing detail about the response of some people to Jesus’ teachings. Jesus had been talking about his relationship with his heavenly Father and John records “When many of his disciples heard it, they said, ‘This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?’ … Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him.”
